STEM + aviation + opportunity

The sky is
not the limit.

A child’s first build can become a first belief in what is possible. We bring aviation, drones, and hands-on STEM within reach for young people across Hampton Roads.

Can you make it fly farther?

Change the design, then watch a sample flight path. Try a wide wing, a different launch angle, or a gust of wind. What would you test next with a paper glider?

Design your glider

Larger wings can help a glider stay aloft.
A steep launch may climb, then slow down.
Wind changes what happens in the air.

A steady starting point

Illustrative learning model. Actual flight depends on the glider, the throw, and the conditions. Test your design in a safe open area with an adult.

TRY IT FOR REALFold two paper gliders. Change just one thing. Measure both flights, record the results, then ask why they differ.
02 / Sample projects

Start with your hands.
Go as far as you can imagine.

These are sample activities for a growing program. Each project makes room for a question, a build, a test, and a better second try.

01

Build a drone

Meet the parts of a small drone, explore balance and control, and practice safe ground checks before any supervised flight.

Engineering · teamwork · safety
See the challenge

Sketch a frame, label the motors and propellers, then explain how your team would check that it is ready. Indoor prototypes use unpowered parts.

02

Paper glider trials

Change one design variable at a time. Make predictions, launch, measure, and chart the results.

Aerodynamics · measurement
See the challenge

Build two gliders with different wing spans. Fly each three times in the same space and compare average distance.

03

Mission: map it

Plan a mock aerial survey and learn how pilots use maps, routes, and careful observation.

Mapping · problem solving
See the challenge

Mark a safe route over a classroom map. Identify landmarks and explain what a crew should observe.

04

Weather watch

Build simple instruments, track changing conditions, and discuss why pilots check the weather.

Earth science · data
See the challenge

Make a paper wind vane. Log its direction at the same time for five days and look for a pattern.

05

Code a flight path

Use beginner-friendly logic to guide a virtual aircraft through a series of waypoints.

Coding · sequencing
See the challenge

Write a set of turn and distance instructions, then trade with a teammate to test whether they reach the destination.

06

Design a rescue supply drop

Create a small parachute, protect a fragile payload, and test how design choices affect landing.

Design · iteration · service
See the challenge

Test two canopy sizes with a lightweight payload. Record landing times and revise your design.

03 / The opportunity pathway

From first spark
to first horizon.

The Toro Opportunity Foundation is developing an accessible pathway from classroom curiosity to real-world aviation exposure, with mentorship at every step.

01

Meet STEM

Hands-on demonstrations that welcome beginners and make science feel possible.

02

Build & test

Flight experiments, drone components, STEM kits, and repeated design challenges.

03

Meet mentors

Educators and aviation professionals connect the workbench to real careers.

04

See the runway

Planned airport experiences help children picture themselves in the field.

A child should be able to see a future in aviation before being asked to believe it is theirs.
04 / Why this matters

Talent is everywhere.
Access is not.

Too many young people encounter aviation only from a distance. This effort is designed to bring tools, patient instruction, and visible role models closer to children who may otherwise never get the invitation.

Projects are built around curiosity, problem solving, teamwork, and a second attempt. The goal is a meaningful first experience, followed by a path to keep learning.

05 / Community connections

A stronger runway,
together.

This program draws on the founder’s education and emergency service work and on local aviation connections. Organizational roles and future collaborations are described individually below.

What support can make possible

  • Drone building and reusable STEM kits
  • Educator time, mentors, and safe supervision
  • Transportation and access to aviation experiences
  • Project materials and take-home learning
  • Simple tracking of participation and learning outcomes

Program activities and funding needs will be refined with schools and partners. Contact us for a proposal and current documentation.
